3 Major Diseases Affecting Orgasm in Men And Women

Diseases of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system have a great influence on orgasm in men and women. Responses to sexual activities are initiated in the brain by stimulative thoughts, sights, scents, and touches.
Generally, any condition, injury, or surgery that involves the brain, spinal cord, or the nerves that supply them can cause sexual impairment. Some therapeutic medications used to control mental and physical diseases alter sexual responses.

Many types of medical complications can directly or indirectly affect men and women sexually and some of them  include:

Although a myriad of diseases affects the ability to attain orgasm successfully, this article will center on the three major diseases that commonly result in orgasmic problems.

Generally, any condition, injury, or surgery that involves the brain, spinal cord, or the nerves that supply them can cause sexual impairment. It is essential to know that some therapeutic medications used to control mental and physical diseases alter sexual responses.

  1. Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes in men is often accompanied by a collapse of sexual functions that leads to the prevalence of erectile dysfunction which manifests itself in small blood vessels or large blood vessel disease.

Neurological factors (urinogenital sensory neuropathy) and poor diabetes management contribute to the development of erectile dysfunction.

The dominance of erectile dysfunction in men with diabetes mellitus increases with age. Ninety-five percent of men above 70 years are the most affected individuals.

Diabetic men show signs of sexual desire disorder, diminished frequency of intercourse, premature ejaculation, and abated sexual satisfaction. They frequently experience retrograde ejaculation due to the malfunctioning of the internal bladder sphincter caused by diabetic neuropathy.

Women with type 2 diabetes have more pronounced sexual complications. They experience less physiological arousal to erotic stimuli, impaired vulvar sensitivity, and poor vaginal lubrication.

The problems may be related to damage to the small blood vessels and larger blood arteries resulting in low blood flow to the clitoris and other erectile tissue.

  1. Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a common neurological illness producing chronic and recurring neurological disability in young adults.

The disease involves disturbances of brain functions including motor, sensory, and gait abnormalities coupled with impaired bladder, bowel, and sexual function.

Men suffering from Multiple sclerosis have erectile difficulties which are dependent on age, the longevity of the disease, and the severity of the symptoms.

Orgasmic disorders such as premature ejaculation with or without erectile disturbances, change in penile sensation, low sexual interest, failure to ejaculate, and numbness also exist.

Women inflicted with multiple sclerosis report low sexual inclination, decreased vaginal lubrication, and declined orgasmic experience. Sensory reduction in the genital region and weakened pelvic muscles are common occurrences.

Sexual disorders caused by multiple sclerosis disease are correlated with lesions in the pons of the brainstem which affect the sensory pathways from the clitoris to the brain.

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s Disease is a neurological disease familiar to old age (above 50 years). It’s characterized by pathological loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the central nervous system.

The most common symptoms include tremors in the hands, muscle rigidity, resistance to flexion and extension in distal and proximal joints, delay in movement initiation, difficulty in reaching a target in a single continuous movement, and delayed reactions to planned movements.

Neurological abnormalities range from slowed cognitive processing, depression, and frank dementia to impaired ability to detect nuanced differences in surface texture.

Women with Parkinson’s Disease have bladder, bowel, and sexual disorders, poor libido, decreased sexual interest, vaginal dryness, arousal difficulties, sexual dissatisfaction, and anorgasmia.

Men with the condition face erectile problems, premature ejaculation, and struggles in achieving coital climax.

Diseases of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system greatly influence orgasm in men and women. Responses to sexual activities are initiated in the brain by stimulative thoughts, sights, scents, and touches.

The transient impulse travels through specific nerve networks to produce impacts on the organs of sex culminating in the pleasurable feelings associated with orgasm and the consequential refractory period.
